We take a look at the couples who really have made love last a lifetime\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>The world\u2019s longest married couples<\/h2>\n<p>The world\u2019s longest living married couple are based in Bradford, UK.<\/p>\n<p>Karam Chand and Kartari Chand were born in 1905 and 1912 respectively &#8211; and were married almost 90 years ago, on the 11th December 1925. The Chands, who met in India as teenagers, now have a combined age of over 211.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2M-wBhNO564<\/p>\n<p>To give you some perspective, 1925 is the year that F. They were thought to be married an impressive 91 years and 12 days.<\/p>\n<p>That one\u2019s a little harder to verify, though, as they were apparently married in 1772 &#8211; with Susan passing away first, in 1863.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Melbourne, Australia, Rowland and Elsie Olarenshaw met when they were just 13 and 14 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, they both <a title=\"longest marriage in Australia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2671682\/Rowland-Elsie-Olarenshaw-met-13-14-years-old-100-Australias-longest-married-couple.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\">turned 100 and celebrated 87 years of marriage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pair played in the street and grew up together &#8211; and by the time they were 19 they realised they had fallen in love. In the middle of the Great Depression, they went against the advice of their parents, got married in a simple ceremony and went on to have five daughters.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TODAY: Century of love\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q0WsufS-FoA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In Connecticut, US, John and Ann Betar eloped together in 1932, to avoid Ann\u2019s father\u2019s plans to marry her off to a man she didn\u2019t love. Relatives were furious, and some thought the marriage wouldn\u2019t last.<\/p>\n<p>But they went on to have five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. And in 2013, they celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of the 15 longest marriages ever:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1801\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1801\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1801\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pearlsonly.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-20-at-22.21.02-1024x663.png?resize=474%2C307&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Worlds longest marriages ever\" width=\"474\" height=\"307\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1801\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_people_with_the_longest_marriages<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"longest marriages on wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_people_with_the_longest_marriages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\">On this page<\/a>\u00a0there is also a list of\u00a0the 100 longest ever marriages (if you have that much stamina).<\/p>\n<h2>Anniversary gifts &#8211; getting it right<\/h2>\n<p>Most of us are familiar with the most famous wedding anniversary landmarks: In western tradition, your 25th anniversary is usually marked with gifts of silver, and your 50th with gifts of gold.<\/p>\n<p>These traditions are thought to have started in medieval Germany, where a bride married 25 years was presented with a silver crown by friends and neighbours (and a gold crown after 50 years) to congratulate her on her successful and long-lasting union.<\/p>\n<p>However, here are some of the wedding anniversary landmarks you may not be so familiar with\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, couple\u2019s 1st and 2nd wedding anniversaries are \u2018cotton\u2019 and \u2018paper\u2019 respectively. \u2018Leather\u2019 is a traditional 3rd anniversary gift; and then it gets even more obscure: 6th is sugar, 7th is wool, 8th is salt, 9th is copper and 10th is tin &#8211; none of which sounds particularly romantic!<\/p>\n<p>Things get a bit more conventional after that.\u00a0A couple\u2019s 15 year anniversary is traditionally associated with crystal. And if you make it to 30 years, the traditional gift is, of course, pearls.<\/p>\n<p>So, what happens beyond 75 years of marriage? How do you celebrate being married for 80 years, or even 90?<\/p>\n<p>At that stage, a bunch of flowers from a petrol station just doesn\u2019t seem appropriate somehow. They follow numerology traditions, which are based around the concept that some numbers are lucky, while others are unlucky.<\/p>\n<p>In China, for example, wedding anniversaries that are multiples of four are thought to be the luckiest of all (for example, 4th, 8th, 12th and 16th anniversaries). So, lots of planning and effort typically goes into these celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>Anniversaries that are odd-numbered, on the other hand, are considered unlucky, so aren\u2019t focused on as much. How to get your marriage off on the right foot<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re the superstitious type, there are lots of things you could try (and avoid!) to help ensure your marriage lasts a lifetime. For example\u2026<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In English tradition, the luckiest day to get married is Wednesday.<\/li>\n<li>In the Netherlands, planting a pine tree outside the home of newly-weds is thought to bring good luck and fertility<\/li>\n<li>In Hindu tradition, rain on your wedding day is actually considered lucky.<\/li>\n<li>In Greece, there is the belief that integrating sugar into a wedding will \u2018sweeten\u2019 the union.<\/li>\n<li>In ancient times, the Romans and Greeks both thought a veil protected the bride from evil spirits &#8211; that tradition really has caught on!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here are 50 more wedding traditions and superstitions to choose from.<\/p>\n<h2>Advice from those \u2018in the know\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>So, what\u2019s the secret to wedded bliss? Here are a few comments from couples who really do know what they\u2019re talking about\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview, Mrs Kartari Chand told The Daily Mail \u201cWe just get along with each other and we are family focused, it\u2019s simple really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher were married for almost 87 years, and a few years ago they took part in a <a title=\"Twitter Q&amp;A\" href=\"https:\/\/lifehacker.com\/marriage-advice-from-the-worlds-longest-married-couple-1605430587\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\">Q&amp;A on Twitter<\/a> to share advice on love and commitment.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Guinness World Record Marriage.mov\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/53Taeu9eWR4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One great piece of advice they gave was: \u201cRemember marriage is not a contest, never keep a score.
